Best Milkshakes

We think the best milkshakes are homemade milkshakes, that way you can make it exactly as you like it. Some people like thicker milkshake recipes, while others like to be able to drink milkshakes easily from a straw.

The best milkshakes also include high quality ingredients. You’ll want to make sure your milkshake ingredients haven’t expired, and that your ice cream isn’t icy.

Ingredients in Milkshakes

Ice Cream – You can use your favorite store bought ice cream, or homemade ice cream recipe. We like using all kinds of ice cream flavors in shake recipes. The most common ice cream flavor used in milkshakes is vanilla ice cream.

We have a recipe for vanilla bean ice cream, and a recipe for a no-churn vanilla ice cream. But you can use any flavor you like.

We also like to use sweet cream ice cream when we make milkshakes. For an extra tang, you can use frozen yogurt.

Milk – We like to use 2% milk when making ice cream, but you can use your favorite milk.

Vegan options – To keep milkshakes vegan, use a vegan ice cream and a dairy-free milk.

Which Milk is best for Making Milkshakes

For a creamy, non-icy milkshake you’ll want to use whole milk. The fat plays a huge roll in keeping the texture smooth.

You can use other milks, including dairy-free milk. If you do use another milk I recommend using less milk and letting the ice cream soften for a few minutes before you make a milkshake.

This will reduce the chances of the milkshake being too ice.

How to make a thick Milkshake

For a thick milkshake use only slightly softened ice cream and the add-ins. You can always add a little milk at a time, to get the desired consistency.

You can also add ice and blend until creamy.

How to Make a Milkshake without a Blender

Scoop the ice cream into a quart size mason jar or a deep glass container and microwave it for 15-30 seconds.

Add in the flavors or add-ins, secure the lid and shake. You can also stir the milkshake mixture with a spoon.

Use the spoon to break up any larger sections of ice cream.

How to Make a Milkshake with a Blender

If you’re adding milk to your milkshake, you’ll want to add the milk to the blender jar first. Then add in the ice cream, and finally the add-ins.

Blend until well combined and serve immediately.
