Blueberry Compote
Homemade blueberry compote is bursting with fruit flavor, made with just three ingredients, and ready to enjoy over a bowl of ice cream in just about 15 minutes.
You’ll love how easy this recipe is to make, with either fresh or frozen berries.
This blueberry compote recipe is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan.
Use fresh or frozen blueberries to make a sweet blueberry compote that is the perfect ice cream topping!
I have a hard time making decisions when it comes to ice cream toppings.
Sometimes I really want something rich, sweet, or chocolatey, like hot fudge, caramel syrup, or peanut butter sauce.
But then again, pairing slightly tart fruit with vanilla ice cream (like we do for apple pie a la mode) is also really satisfying. It’s also super yummy on mini angel food cake.
Luckily, I don’t have to choose! I keep jars of all of my favorite ice cream toppings in the fridge so I can pick the one that sounds perfect at any given moment.
And right now, blueberry compote is high on my list of perfect things!
Why You’re Going to Love this Blueberry Compote Recipe
This sauce is bursting with fruit flavor, and with only berries, lemon juice, and sugar on the ingredients list, the sweet-tart flavor of blueberries can really shine.
It’s also easy to make ahead and can be made in just 15 minutes, then stored in the fridge for up to a week or more.
Homemade blueberry compote tastes so much better than anything you might find in the store. Storebought compotes typically come in small jars and will include preservatives that take away from the freshness of the sauce.
They’ll also be expensive since compote is most popular in Europe, those tiny jars will have been imported from overseas!
And while we’re obviously suggesting that you enjoy blueberry compote over a cool bowl of homemade ice cream, it’s also delicious on other things. Just like raspberry compote, you can enjoy it on toast or waffles, swirled into yogurt, or mixed into a smoothie.

Ingredients in Homemade Blueberry Compote
- Blueberries – I usually use frozen blueberries to make compote, since they’re easy to keep on hand, but this recipe works well with fresh berries too. If you’re using frozen blueberries, let them thaw before getting started.
- Sugar – Just a quarter cup of sugar adds enough sweetness to balance the flavor of the sauce without making it overly sugary. If your berries seem particularly tart, feel free to add an extra tablespoon of sugar.
- Lemon Juice – Use fresh lemon juice (not bottled) for the best flavor.
How to Make Blueberry Compote
This recipe for blueberry compote is incredibly easy. Just add all of the ingredients to a pan and heat them up!
- Add the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice to a small sauce pot. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is melted and the compote starts to bubble.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove the compote from heat and allow it to cool to room temperature. Store in a container in the refrigerator. The compote will be runny but it will thicken when it chills.

How to Store Homemade Blueberry Compote
Homemade blueberry sauce will stay fresh in the fridge for 5-7 days. I like to keep mine in a glass mason jar, but any type of airtight container will work just fine.
After you’ve cooked the compote, let it cool down to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.
Tips for Making This Blueberry Compote Recipe
- Use quality ingredients – When making homemade ice cream toppings, you’ll want to make sure you are using high-quality ingredients for the best outcome.
- Don’t skimp on the sugar – Blueberries are sweet, but not quite sweet enough to be an ice cream topping on their own. The amount of sugar in this recipe is perfect, and you can even add more if your berries are particularly tart.
- Don’t want the seeds and skins? Press the finished compote through a fine mesh sieve to create a smooth blueberry sauce.
What’s The Difference Between Jam and Compote?
The difference is in the texture and the cooking method. Jam is usually made with chopped or crushed fruit, then cooked with sugar and pectin to create a thick spread.
On the other hand, compote is made with whole berries or large pieces of fruit. It’s cooked and meant to be enjoyed fresh, rather than preserved in a jar, and has a thinner texture than jam.
Can I Use Other Berries?
Yes, you can swap out the blueberries for strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, or a combination of multiple berries. Mixed berry compote is another favorite of mine.
