Ingredients in Homemade Oreo Milkshake
Whole Milk – To make the creamiest milkshake, whole milk is your best choice. If you’re making this recipe with dairy-free ice cream, choose your creamiest dairy-free milk.
Vanilla Ice Cream – Vanilla truly is the finest of the flavors and the base for most of our homemade milkshake recipes. Here, it is the perfect match for chocolate sandwich cookies. You can pick up your favorite high-quality vanilla ice cream at the store, or make one of our homemade vanilla ice cream recipes.
Oreos – 1/2 cup of chopped Oreos seems to be the perfect amount for a milkshake, but feel free to use a bit more or less. 5 chopped Oreos should give you that much. Save some for a fun garnish too.
Optional Milkshake Toppings: I like to add whipped cream and a cherry to all of my homemade milkshakes, and to this one, I added chocolate syrup, a whole Oreo cookie and some extra cookie crumbs too.

Tips for Making The Best Oreo Milkshake
Use quality ingredients – When making homemade milkshakes, you’ll want to make sure you are using high-quality ingredients for the best outcome. Choose the best ice cream, fresh milk, and fresh cookies for a quality Oreo milkshake.
Chill out – If possible, always start with chilled ingredients. It’s best to keep the milk in the fridge and the ice cream in the freezer until right before making your shake.
Enjoy Right Away – It’s important to drink your homemade milkshake right after blending it. It will melt quickly, and you’ll lose the perfect milkshake texture you’ve created! In an oreo milkshake, if you make and enjoy it quickly, you can enjoy a bit of crunch left in the cookies.
Make it Gluten Free – Gluten-Free Oreos are pretty delicious and will work perfectly in this milkshake recipe. Check to be sure that your ice cream is gluten-free as well.
Make it Dairy Free – For any milkshake recipe, replace the ice cream with a creamy plant-based frozen dessert, and replace the milk with your creamiest non-dairy milk option. Oreo cookies are already vegan!

Which Milk is Best for Making Milkshakes?
For a creamy, non-icy milkshake like an Oreo Milkshake, you’ll want to use whole milk. The fat plays a huge role in keeping the texture smooth.
You can use other kinds of milk, including dairy-free milk. If you do use another milk, I recommend using less milk and letting the ice cream soften for a few minutes before you make a milkshake.
Can I Make a Milkshake With Oreo Ice Cream?
You can make a milkshake with any kind of ice cream that you like! A milkshake made with Oreo ice cream will be very similar to this one that’s made from vanilla ice cream and crushed Oreos.
The main difference between a milkshake made from cookies and cream ice cream and one made from ice cream plus cookies is that the one with the crushed cookies will have a bit more texture to it.
Can I Add Cookies to a Milkshake?
You sure can add cookies to milkshakes, and that’s exactly how we’re making this Oreo Milkshake so delicious! Any kind of cookies will blend into milkshakes, but Oreos are probably the most common.
Chocolate chip cookies or peanut butter cookies would also make a delicious milkshake add-in.
How to Make an Oreo Milkshake Without a Blender
To make a milkshake without a blender, you want to soften the ice cream first. This helps to create a creamy milkshake!
Microwave the ice cream in a quart-size mason jar or another deep glass container for 15-30 seconds.
Then add the crushed Oreos, and mix! You can use a spoon to mix the milkshake, or put a lid on the jar and shake until it’s well combined.
You may not need to add any milk, but if the mixture is too thick, add a tablespoon and mix again. Continue until you have a shake in the texture that you want, and enjoy!
What is The Best Ratio of Ice Cream to Milk in a Milkshake?
All of our homemade milkshake recipes use the same basic milk to ice cream ratio, and it’s 2 cups of ice cream to ¼ cup of milk.
These amounts create a thick, smooth, creamy milkshake, but you can easily adjust them to make your shake extra thick or a bit thinner.
How to Make an Extra Thick Milkshake
Omit the milk called for in the recipe and make the milkshake using just slightly softened ice cream and crushed Oreos.
You can also add ice and blend until creamy.
How to Make a Milkshake Thinner
Add more milk, a little bit at a time, and blend until the milkshake is exactly how you like it.
Oreo Milkshake Add-Ins
Do you want to make your Oreo Milkshake even more spectacular? Of course you do!
- Try adding in some chocolate syrup, or any of your favorite ice cream toppings.
- A teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of instant espresso powder will elevate the chocolate and vanilla flavors of the Oreos even more.
- Add peanut butter for a nutty, rich variation.
Can You Make a Milkshake with Golden Oreos?
Yes! Any type of Oreos can be used to make a creamy and crunchy Oreo shake. Try golden Oreos with strawberry ice cream or butterscotch ice cream for a different spin on this recipe.
